WhatsApp lead generation with Meta ads: how click-to-WhatsApp campaigns work

By Abhishek Gupta · Published 20 Oct 2026 · Updated 20 Oct 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer

A click-to-WhatsApp ad opens a WhatsApp chat with your business when someone taps it. Meta counts a “messaging conversation started” as the result. In three travel accounts we manage, the spend-weighted cost per conversation was about ₹11 to ₹27, with single campaigns from ₹4.58 to ₹54.48. A chat is an enquiry, not a sale, so reply speed decides what it is worth.

What is a click-to-WhatsApp ad?

A click-to-WhatsApp ad is a Facebook or Instagram ad whose button opens a chat with your business on WhatsApp instead of a website. When the person sends a first message, Meta counts a messaging conversation started. It suits businesses that sell by conversation: travel, real estate, education, local services and high-consideration products.

How do you set one up?

  1. Connect a WhatsApp Business account (the WhatsApp Business app or the API) to your Facebook Page in Meta Business Settings.
  2. Create a campaign with the Messages or Engagement objective and choose WhatsApp as the destination.
  3. Write a pre-filled opening message (“Hi, I’m interested in the Spiti batch”), so the first message tells you what the person wants and which ad brought them.
  4. Add a greeting and quick replies for common questions, and save the ad name in your lead sheet.
  5. Decide who answers, and in what hours, before launch.

What does a WhatsApp conversation cost?

In the accounts we manage, spend-weighted cost per conversation was about ₹10.65 for Travel Junction, ₹24.19 for Safarnama with Anu and ₹26.59 for GCI Adventure, with single campaigns from ₹4.58 to ₹54.48. The lowest results came from destination- and season-specific campaigns; the highest from smaller tests and urgency posts. See the full data note and the Travel Junction case study. These are not benchmarks.

What turns a chat into a customer?

  • Speed. A buyer who messages three businesses buys from the one that answers first.
  • A clear first reply. Name the offer, ask one or two qualifying questions and propose a next step (a call, a brochure, a booking).
  • Follow-up. Many people read and go quiet. A polite reminder the next day recovers a share of them.
  • Outcome tracking. Mark each chat as qualified, booked or lost, so you can report cost per booking and not only cost per chat.

When should you not use WhatsApp ads?

Skip them if nobody can answer messages quickly, if the product is a low-price impulse purchase better sold on a landing page, or if you need detailed form data before a call. In those cases an instant form or a landing page works better. Travel Junction found this the hard way when a purchase-objective campaign returned 2 purchases for ₹4,557.13.

Only message people who have contacted you, use WhatsApp’s approved templates for business-initiated messages and respect opt-outs. Tell people how you will use their number. India’s DPDP Rules apply to personal data you collect this way.

Key takeaways

  • A messaging conversation started is the result; it is an enquiry, not a sale.
  • Pre-fill the opening message so you know what the person wants.
  • Reply speed decides the value of every chat.
  • Track chats to outcomes to know cost per booking.
