Why travel advertising is different

A travel buyer is not buying a product off a shelf. They are choosing a destination, a date, a price and a person to trust, often after comparing several operators and the large online travel agencies. That changes how ads have to work.

  • It is seasonal and date-bound. Holi, Goa Diwali, winter Spiti batches, the Kedarnath yatra and the Ladakh season each have a booking window. Budget and creative have to be ready before it opens.
  • Each destination is its own market. The price point, the buyer and the competition differ for Manali, Udaipur, Dubai and Ladakh, so one campaign cannot serve them all.
  • The sale happens in conversation. Itinerary, dates, fitness, price and inclusions are settled over WhatsApp or a call, so the first result to optimise for is a chat, not a checkout.
  • Speed decides. A traveller who messages three operators books with the one who answers first.

What seven accounts taught us

1. WhatsApp is the result for most travel brands

Travel Junction, GCI Adventure and Safarnama with Anu optimise for “messaging conversations started”. Across the campaign rows we read, cost per chat is ₹10.65 for Travel Junction (spend-weighted over 39 campaigns), ₹24.19 for Safarnama with Anu and ₹26.59 for GCI Adventure. Travel Junction · Safarnama with Anu · GCI Adventure.

2. Destination decides the cost

Inside Travel Junction’s account, Manali campaigns cost ₹8.80 per conversation (spend-weighted) and Udaipur campaigns ₹25.72. Inside Himalayan Musafir’s account, domestic multi-destination lead forms cost ₹23.22 per lead and Dubai and Singapore forms ₹107.59. A cheap lead is not the same buyer as a high-ticket lead, which is why we report cost by destination. Himalayan Musafir.

3. Search captures route and package intent

For cabs and packages that people search for by route, Google Search by route works: Next Cab’s account runs a campaign per route and shows ₹48 per conversion on Uttarakhand packages, ₹58.94 on Shimla–Manali and ₹763 on call-only. Next Cab · Jupiter Travels.

4. Stricter events cost more

Campaigns optimised for “qualified leads” inside Meta returned few results at ₹197 to ₹1,839 each in Himalayan Musafir’s account. They filter well and scale badly, so we use them for one departure at a time, with a team that can follow up fast.

5. Boosted posts can beat dedicated campaigns, and can lose

Safarnama with Anu’s boosted Ladakh post reached ₹9.82 per chat; urgency posts for the last seats cost up to ₹50.26. We keep a boost only if it beats the always-on campaign.

How we run a travel account

  1. Calendar first. We list your departures and booking windows and plan campaigns two to four weeks ahead of each.
  2. One campaign per destination or departure, named by place and date, each with its own budget.
  3. WhatsApp as the front door. Click-to-WhatsApp ads and a pre-filled opening message, with instant forms for brands that qualify by budget or dates.
  4. Answer fast. We agree a reply target with your team and ask you to mark every chat as qualified, booked or lost.
  5. Learn per destination. The weekly report shows cost per chat and, once outcomes are marked, cost per qualified enquiry and per booked seat, by destination.
  6. Retarget and reuse. People who watched a video or started a chat see the next departure; winners are duplicated for the next season.

Keeping travel ads honest

Travel ads work best when they are exact. Show the real itinerary, the real inclusions and a “from” price that you will honour. Misleading price or inclusion claims draw complaints, wasted leads and, under India’s advertising codes, regulatory attention. We write ad copy from your actual package sheet and keep a record of what each ad promised.

FAQ

Travel and tourism: your questions answered

In the accounts on this site, cost per WhatsApp chat ranged from ₹4.58 to ₹54.48 for Travel Junction, ₹9.82 to ₹50.26 for Safarnama with Anu and ₹10.03 to ₹43.58 for GCI Adventure. These are not benchmarks; they depend on destination, season and offer.

Most of the accounts here use WhatsApp conversations because travel is sold in conversation. Instant forms work when you want to qualify by dates or budget before a call. We test both per destination.

Yes, when people search by route, destination or service. Next Cab’s route-wise Search campaigns recorded conversions from ₹48 to ₹763 each by route, so budget follows the routes that earn it.

We plan campaigns two to four weeks before a booking window opens and keep a smaller always-on campaign between departures.

Yes. Prakriti Escapes runs on a few hundred rupees a day per campaign, and GCI Adventure is a Hisar agency. The approach scales down to one departure at a time.
